Haridwar: Situated at the foot hills of the Himalayas, the city is a doorway to the land of holy shrines and pilgrimages, prayer and devotion. Haridwar in Hindi literally means "Gateway to the Lord". The city also represents the point where the sacred river Ganga enters the plains.

Haridwar is the site of the Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, which is the biggest congregation in the world.

At the Hari Ki Pauri (meaning "at the feet of Lord Shiva") is the spot where devotees offer prayers on the steps leading down to the river. Every evening the Ganga Aarti is performed at all temples in Haridwar at the same time - which culminates in a moving spectacle of thousands of lamps set afloat in the Ganga by the multitude of worshippers.
